How Models Should Prepare for a Photo ShootThe Ultimate Guide by Justin Jeffers | Executive Photographer
A great photoshoot is a collaboration. When models come prepared, confident, and professional, we create images that are not only beautiful but also powerful and authentic.
As a Trinidad and Tobago-based photographer specializing in fashion, lifestyle, commercial, and real estate photography, here’s my complete guide to help models prepare for a successful shoot.
1. How to Prepare Before the Shoot
Understand the Vision Review the shoot brief carefully. Know the theme, mood, location, and style so you can get into character before you arrive.
Skincare & Grooming Hydrate well and moisturize for 2–3 days prior. Avoid new skincare products or heavy sun exposure right before the shoot. Get a fresh haircut/trim and ensure nails are clean and neat.
Practice Posing Spend time practicing in front of a mirror or recording yourself. Focus on good posture, natural expressions, and smooth transitions between poses.
Rest & Nutrition Get a good night’s sleep. Eat a light balanced meal before the shoot and avoid heavy or greasy food.
2. What Models Should Bring to a Shoot
Essential Checklist:
Skin-tone seamless undergarments (nude or matching)
Your own makeup kit, concealer, powder, and setting spray
Hair products, brush, comb, and clips
Comfortable changing robe or cover-up
Multiple outfit options (even if wardrobe is provided)
Heels + comfortable flats or walking shoes
Portable phone charger
Reusable water bottle + light snacks (fruit, nuts, protein bars)
Deodorant, wet wipes, lip balm, and lotion
Any specific props or accessories discussed
Pro Tip: Pack everything in one easy-to-carry bag so you can move quickly between setups.
3. Photography Etiquette On Set
Professional behavior makes the entire shoot smoother and more enjoyable:
Arrive 10–15 minutes early
Greet and show respect to everyone on the team (photographer, assistant, makeup artist, etc.)
Communicate clearly and politely if something feels uncomfortable
Stay present and minimize phone use during shooting
Be open to direction and feedback
Maintain positive energy , it shows in the final images
Respect all locations ,leave them cleaner than you found them
Final Words from the Photographer
The best photos happen when you relax, trust the process, and enjoy the moment. Movement, natural expressions, and real emotion always create the strongest images.
Preparation is what separates good models from great ones.
